For the majority of brides and grooms, following wedding traditions is part and parcel of a wedding ceremony and reception. This has been the case for many generations, and is unlikely to go out of fashion in the near future. However, some couples are deciding to tweak a few wedding traditions, making them slightly more modern, and more individual to their wedding.

Don’t be afraid to take these steps and change what many have followed in the past, if it suits you, or your wedding. Use the following ideas to help you make your wedding truly yours.

Instead of the cake cutting…
More couples are serving smaller cakes as part of a display, or even using them as centrepieces, with many now choosing cupcakes for their guests. You don’t even have to choose traditional cake. If you prefer, cheesecake, ice-cream or pastry cakes, then display and serve that.

Instead of a traditional first dance…
If you would prefer a more upbeat, lively dance with your husband, consider a tango or salsa. If not that, what about something that you have prepared beforehand as a surprise to your guests?

Instead of the bouquet toss…
Many brides are ignoring the bouquet toss altogether, with some guests less than eager to participate. Instead, consider honouring your closest friends with a toast or with personal notes.

Instead of making a dramatic exit…
The bride and groom are often whisked away in a car to their hotel or honeymoon, but more couples are now sending their guests off. Providing shuttles, taxis, buses or even boats to ensure the guests get home safely.

Instead of a father-daughter dance…

Invite other fathers and daughters to join you and your father on the floor. Equally, some brides even dance with their mother, stepfather or friend – whoever is special to you.

Instead of wedding photography…
As well as the classic wedding photography, it is now popular for couples to introduce a hashtag, or a folder where all guests can upload their own photos to. Capturing special moments, as they happen, from a different perspective.

These wedding traditions are there to be followed or adjusted, whatever best suits you and your other half. This also applies to the wedding gown itself, with different shapes and colours now being more extensively worn.
